Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wildes Humour
Wilde makes good use of the surreal or ridiculous situation. He has already done this in the fleck Act with the arriver of Jack in undecomposed mourning attire for his brother, when we as the audience deal that Algernon, in disguise as his brother has just arrived and introduced himself to Cecily. This serves to undercut Jacks pretend mourning, and make it ridiculous and a comic situation for the audience.
In the second half of the Second Act, there is another example of this farcical quality that sure as shooting describes the dominant trend throughout the play. Cecily reveals to Algernon that she has already been engaged to him for the last trinity months, despite not meeting him till this moment in this play! Wilde is obviously contriving this plot twist to maximise the mentality of the scenario, and is it easy to see the comedy in Cecily buying herself an affaire ring from Ernest, and writing love letters to herself from him.
Wilde flags up for us the parity between Algernon and Cecily, Jack and Gwendolen for us by mirroring the jocundity about the importance of being called Ernest which he started in the first base Act with Gwendolen.

The plays title comes into its own here: it is important (for Gwendolen and Cecily) to be Ernest, so important that it causes the falling out of the two women when they both conceive of themselves to be engaged to a man called Ernest Worthing. What we the audience know at this point is...If you want to get a full essay, order it on our website: Ordercustompaper.com
