Its a collection of story afterward story of events and situations that were meaningful to him, enough to put them in his book. On the other hand, there are a few specific scenes where Frank is really breed for something, give outing hard to obtain a goal, to get something he wants, or in search of something. Many of the times the things he works for dont end the way he plans, or expects. He gets nothing out of his hard work and the results arent what he hoped for.
The first scene to portray these ideas is the bazaar scene.
While in Florida, Frank goes to a carnival with his dress hat friend Tobey and his family. As theyre getting ready to leave, Frank and Tobey stop by one last game stand, a closed chain toss game. The grand prize is a revolver, to develop it you must land two of three rings onto a red peg. Now most people know that these types of games are rigged, the rings dont fit over the peg, its angled but the player cant train that from their position, etc. Overwhelmed by the thought of winning the revolver, Frank and toby jug decide to give it a shot. Tobey goes first and missed all three. With his three tosses he figures the strategy they need to get the ring over the peg.
